영어회화 23일 : 후회하기

1. I should have ~   :   ~ 했어야 하는건데

I should have listened to your advice.    네 충고를 들었어야 하는건데.

It’s too late to regret it now.    지금 후회해도 늦었어.

• 너의 충고를 듣자 않았다니 난 정말 어리석었어.   I was so stupid not to listen to your advice.
• 왜 내가 너의 충고를 듣지 않았을까?   Why didn’t I listen to your advice?
• 왜 그걸 진작 생각하지 못했을까?   Why didn’t I think of that?

 

2. I regret that I didn’t ~  :   ~ 하지 않은 것이 후회돼

I regret that I didn’t prepare in advance.    미리미리 준비 안한 것이 이제야 후회되.

I’ll have to check out it.   내가 확인해봐야겠어.

• 이제 와서 시작한다고해서 너무 늦은 것은 아니었으면 좋겠어.   I just hope it’s not too late to start.
• 더 열심히 공부하지 않은 것이 후회돼.   I’m feeling sorry that I didn’t study hard enough.
• 그 당시에는 내가 무슨 생각으로 그랬는지 모르겠어.  I don’t know what I was thinking.

 

3. 영어로 말해보기

James :  그래, 시험은 어떻게 봤니?

동생    :  묻지마. 아주 절망적이야.

James :  하지만, 너 공부 열심히 했잖아. 안그래?

동생    :  아니. 좀 더 열심히 하지 않은게 후회돼.

James :  그래?
동생    :  원한다면 더 열심히 할 수도 있었는데.

James :  너무 실망하지마. 이제 끝났잖아. 어쩌겠어?

동생    :  무슨뜻이야 이제 다 끝났다는게? 맞아, 선생님 말씀을 들었어야 했어. 하지만 이제 너무 늦었어.

James :  아냐,아냐. 내 말은 그런뜻이 아니야.

 

James :  So, how did you do on the test?

동생    :  Please, don’t ask. I feel so devastated.

James :  But you studied really hard, didn’t you?

동생    :  No. Now I wish that I didn’t study hard enough. Jame: Yeah?
동생    :  I know I could try harder if I wanted to.

James :  Don’t be so disappointed. It’s all over now. What can you do?

동생    :  What do you mean “It’s all over now”? Yeah, I should have listened to my teacher. But it’s too late!

James :  No, no. That’s not what I meant!

 

 

James :  그애한테 좀 더 조심했어야 했어.
Anne   :  내가 그랬지. 자기 가끔 너무 무심하다고.

James :  내가 생각해도 그래. 왜 내가 자기 충고를 듣지 않았을까?

Anne   :  네가 바보같아서 그래.

James :  네 말이 맞는 것 같아. 난 요즘 내가 왜 공부를 더 열심히 하지 않았는지 후회돼. 유학 장학금도 받을 수 있었는데.

Anne   :  사실, 정말 원했을면 할수도 있었을 텐데.

James :  지금이라도 시작하기에 너무 늦은게 아니라면 좋겠는데.

 

James :  I should have been more careful with her.
Anne   :  I told you, sometime you‘re so insensitive.

James :  I guess I am. Why didn’t I listen to your advice?

Anne   :  Because you’re stupid.

James :  I think you’re right. Now I’m feeling sorry that I didn’t study harder.   I could get a scholarship to study abroad.

Anne   :  Actually, you could try if you really wanted to

James :  I just hope it’s not too late to start now.
